In 1990 Osama bin Laden used a group of trained Afghanistan fighters to launch the organization called Al-Qaeda. It advocated violence to achieve its goal to overcome Western influence in the Islamic world and to overthrow corrupt Islamic governments. It used the U.S. invasion of Iraq to justify a call for war against the United States.
