NADH and FADH₂ cannot donate electrons to the chain. NADH continues to accumulate because it can't pass off its electrons. Free energy ceases to be created as electrons stop passing down the chain. H+:
a) Accumulates in the intermembrane space.
b) Moves into the matrix.
c) Is converted to ATP.
d) Reacts with oxygen to form water.
