Why did las casas urge colonists to import slaves from africa?

Las Casa wanted the colonists to bring slaves to fill the labor shortages and in hopes that they would fare better than the weakened Native Americans. Later on he recanted this stance as well, and became an advocate for the Africans in the colonies.
