Sum like terms in the left hand side:

[tex] 8z - 4 < -20 [/tex]

Add 4 to both sides:

[tex] 8z < -16 [/tex]

Divide both sides by 8. Since 8 is positive, you don't have to switch the inequality sign:

[tex] z < -2 [/tex]
