the mine pumps were first, driven by a simple beam-engineinvented by Newcomen; but it was dreadfully inefficient andnon-rotary. Once James Watt solved the first problem, and he andothers devised engines that produced rotary motion, thesteam-engine could be developed into a viable prime-mover fortextile-mills and many other industries.
