Note that both equations contain -2x so if we subtract them this will disappear.

-2x + 8y = 14

-2x - 2y = -26       Subtract:-

0  + 10y = 40

y = 4

Substitute fro y in the first equation:-

-2x + 8(4) = 14

-2x = 14 - 32 = -18

x = 9


Answer x = 9   y = 4
