"Anterior" means "to the front". A horse's head is anterior to the rest of its body. Contrariwise, "posterior" means "to the back", like a horse's tail.

I agree with Winters: Anterior means something that is near the front of a body or a head or could mean earlier.

For example: The Civil War was anterior to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
