why is 12/17 is larger than 3/4 ? or why is 3/4 is larger than 12/17?

You have to find the common denominator first, which is 68, then you do the math
12/17 is equal to 48/68 
and, 3/4 is equal to 51/68
so, 51 is larger than 48
therefore, 3/4 is larger than 12/17
