A group of 19 students registered for a speed-reading
class at a local community college. On the first day of
class, students were timed as they read a passage
from a novel. The mean time of all the students was
189 minutes with a standard deviation of 21 minutes.
Six months later, the students were timed again as they
read a passage of similar length and readability level.
Each student in the course lost exactly 10 minutes on
their reading times.
