what is the basic difference between Ragtime (Scott Joplin), and Jazz (Jelly Roll Morton)?

Jazz came out of ragtime, so it's not surprising they would sound similar. Jelly Roll is early New Orleans style jazz, while Scott Joplin is solidly pre-jazz ragtime.
