Why is 1/2 of 60 is not the same as 1/2 of 24

You would solve 1/2 of 60 by multiplying 60 by .50 (1/2) which would give you 30. 
You would solve 1/2 of 24 by multiplying 24 by .50 (1/2) which would give you 12.
