If one was to question which empire (the Spanish or the British) was more immediately successful, the answer would be the Spanish. Yet, in the long run, the Spanish empire stagnated politically, socially, and economically, while the British empire was thriving. What factors do you believe account for the success of the British empire in the long run?

Why was the British empire so successful?

The British government allowed for private companies to take over other lands in its name. This allowed for British influence to spread at little government cost.

The British also took land and other resources from defeated Natives in ruthless form. When they didn't have the numbers, they would divide Natives against each other and subjugate them in turns.
