There are two elements in each compound. find each of them on the periodic table and see their electronegativity value. For example, NaCl-
Na is 0.9
Cl is 3.0.
The electronegativity difference is the difference of these two numbers: 3.0-0.9=2.1
then check this value against the table up top. 2.1 falls into the catagory >1.7 "ionic bond" so tick ionic.
