If (x-1) is a factor then P(1)  = a(1)^3 + b(1)^2  + 1  =  0  ( by the factor theorem)

so a + b = -1

Also  (x - 1)^2  = x^2 - 2x  + 1

so a = 1 and b = -2 Answer
