[tex]3 \frac{1}{2} = \frac{7}{2}[/tex]

[tex]\frac{7}{2} \times 8 = 28[/tex]

[tex]\frac{28}{12} = \frac{14}{6} = \frac{7}{3} = 2 \frac{1}{3}[/tex]

So each hiker gets 2 1/3 cup of trail mix.
