f(x) is function notation, and is still solved similar to a "y=" equation. We want to solve the equation where the equation's solution equals 4. Therefore, solve like a y= equation and find the x-value which gives a 4 for the answer:

4=5x+7
4-7=5x
-3=5x
(-3/5)=x
