Let the number be X
3x+5=26
3x= 26-5
3x=21
x=7
The number is 7

Proof if it is required on your test:
3x+5=26
3(7)+5= 26
21+5=26
26=26

(Hope this helps!)

Divide 3x by 3 then 21 by 3
That leaves with 1x = 7
