an estranged Asian immigrant mother who lost her baby twin girls in China when she immigrated. She wants her daughter, June, to play piano, especially after seeing an Asian girl on the Ed Sullivan show playing piano. June hates the piano, but is forced to take lessons with a deaf teacher. When she goes to the recital, she botches it, and says she wishes her mother was dead like the twins.
