Brazil's economy under Portuguese colonialism was centered on sugar, which lead to the importing of African slaves. Because Portugal owned slave facilities in Africa, it was found to be easier to utilize this model than to utilize native slave labor. Sugarcane adapted well to being grown in Brazil. By the 1700's, the age of sugar was over in Brazil.
