At the beginning of the Civil War, 15 of the 34 states were slave states. The other 19 were free states. Eleven of the 15 slave states seceded from the Union and formed what became known as the Confederacy. On December 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery and obliterated the distinction between free states and slave states.
