To solve the problem, we take 5 1/8 and 3 4/8 to set it up

    5 1/8
-   3 4/8
______

Since 1/8 is too small to subtract 4/8, we can borrow from the 5 so we end up getting 4 9/8 - 3 4/8. The answer is 1 5/8.
