Proteins secreted by epithelial cells. The basement membrane forms as a thin protein fibre membrane with mucopolysaccharides. It separates an epithelium from underlying tissue. Its main function is to anchor epithelium to dermis underneath. The membrane consists of different extracellular matrix structural proteins.
