They monitor the ever changing temperatures over the oceans and other land masses to see if there could be a hurricane or tsunami forming and they also monitor the land masses to see if there could be an earthquake. By doing this they can send out the word to evacuate an area before the disaster strikes, decreasing the amount of people in the disaster area
