Scientist Alfred Wegener thought in the early through middle 1900s that the plate movement was a "modern" version of the continental drift. 
Today's scientists have now proven that plate motion is driven by the currents of convection in the asthenosphere and the overlying lithosphere. The downward pull on the plates cause the motion.
